You are right. The plugin currently only provides real-time notifications about new comments when viewing a specific blog post and it’s comments. The use case I had in mind when writing the plugin, was that someone was reading a blog post and it’s comments, and by the time she or he reaches the last comment, they would be notified if there had been any new comments posted while they were reading.
How ever, functionality for notifications on the front-page as well could be implemented quite easily. If any one want to give it a shot, just fork my GitHub repository: http://github.com/heyman/beacon-wordpress!
