 * I just saved myself $139.
 * Like I said I believed the issue was a file issue.
 * I followed the instruction of the post below, setting dictionary size to 32K
   and selecting gzip as the format.

 * I strongly believe the correct file output for .com export should be .gzip and
   the documentation regarding transferring to .org should strongly state the .xml
   file should be converted to .gzip

 * Hi Mike,
 * Thanks your reply.
 * In regards to the $129 fee, I do believe it is excessive especially if it requires
   my time working with my hosting provider to get WordPress installed. My time
   is not free especially and no where on the .com site have I read the fee may
   be reduced if my time is needed to work with my hosting company.
 * Based on my experience in IT I am fully capable of doing the import myself and
   since it is not going as expected, all I need is guidance on what needs to be
   done. If I need to pay someone to install it, I know enough IT professionals
   in database and network expertise that will charge me significantly less than
   $839 / hour.
 * At this moment a conservative estimate of my time spent on this issue is 5 hours,
   including researching the issue, contacting my hosting company to change the
   php.ini file size and trying to make the install work. When I charge for my time,
   for IT, I charge $20 – $30 / hour.
 * Plus if WordPress .com can do it flawlessly in 10 minutes then it means the cost
   per hour is $839 / hour ($139*6). No one in their right mind would pay someone
   $839 / hour to install a WordPress site form an export file.
 * Moving on to my import issue, I have taken smaller import of posts published
   in June 2012, file size 486KB. This time no error message and it has taken me
   to another screen asking for author and attachment. I chose the admin name for
   author and receive an error message “Failed to import [post name] Invalid Post
   Type.”
 * In my opinion, I believe .com is exporting a file that is not allowing .org to
   import. If this is the is the situation then .com should either fix the issue,
   at no charge, or do the install to .org at no charge. Simply put I believe there
   is a translation issue where .org is unable to read the .com file. This can be
   due to issues with the export, how the file is being read, or another issue.
 * I know at one point there was a plugin to break a file down but I do not see
   it available.
 * Alternatively if there is an issue with my web hosting company then please let
   me know what changes need to be made to allow the file to export. I have another
   WP site on my hosting company under a different domain that is running without
   issue but I did not have to do an export. Finally, I have not had any issue with
   my hosting company and I struggle to see how a .xml file of any size, especially
   when I have no size restriction, can cause issues.
 * Finally I have come across this post, [https://wordpress.org/support/topic/failure-to-import-and-invalid-post-type-errors?replies=20](https://wordpress.org/support/topic/failure-to-import-and-invalid-post-type-errors?replies=20)
 * I will try it and update.

 * Thanks for the replies.
 * $129 is excessive for the process especially if goes goes cleany or a few tweaks
   need to be made by the web hosting company. The time to upgrade can be as short
   as 10 minutes meaning the effective rate is about $800 / hour. I know experienced
   IT professionals who will charge less than $800 / hour.
 * As for me, I work in IT on the business side and have some technical skills,
   in particular: limited Sql, html, network knowledge, php knowledge is fuzzy though
   I can do it. Also I have UAT experience, IT change management, IT release management
   experience, and I have done some front-end (user) database administration.
 * Since do not know the schema of the database for wordpress and I do not know
   its structure I cannot workout the issue.
 * I am more than happy to send you the xml file, as I suspect this is probably
   a part of the issue and suspect the issue is how .con probably exported it. Let
   me know where to send it.
 * As for my hosting company, I cannot make changes to my php.ini file and have
   to request changes. If changes need to be made let me know and I will request
   them.

 * I disagree it is a settings issue.
 * I have disabled my firewall and anti-virus to rule out uploading problem and
   still the same error message. The install I am using is very new and no settings
   have been changed. Today I uninstalled and re-installed WP with the same error
   message.
 * I suspect the issue lies in either the export from the .com or import module
   in 4.0.
 * Reason why I say this, I have not received an adequate explanation regarding
   the error message while importing the file. In addition, I have addressed the
   file size issues and addressed any other issue that I can think of that will
   interfere with importing the file. The only thing left is a WordPress issue that
   deals with how the file is exported from .com or how the xml file is imported
   into the .org WordPress site.

 * Hi Mark,
 * My .org install is new and no settings have been changed.
 * Your reply is quite disappointing and not encouraging. It means my two years
   of hard work in writing and promoting my site has been lost. Along with the countless
   hours I have spent have been lost not to mention the money spent to get me onto.
   org/
 * Furthermore from reading the forums transferring from .com to .org does not appear
   to be as straightforward as the documentation on WordPress makes it appears.
   Since this appears to be a common issue and the amount of time WordPress has
   been around I would expect a large knowledge base on how to solve importing xml
   file generated on a wordpress.com site into a wordpress .org site.
 * If this is the best that can be done then in my opinion, it falls short of what
   I expect from WordPress and I will need to consider all of my options.

 * I have had my hosting company change the php.ini file size to 64mb. I am still
   receiving the same errors.
 * My feeling, there is something wrong with the importer?

 * I have been able to log into my .com wordpress site and did an export of only
   posts. File size was 5424KB. The error message I received was:
 * _Sorry, there has been an error.
    The uploaded file exceeds the upload\_max\_filesize
   directive in php.ini.

 * Hi mark,
 * File exported to wordpad and shows as xml in explorer. When opened it looks similar
   to html. I am assuming it has exported correctly.

 * I am at a point where my php.ini file is set to 15GB for uploading files.
 * My export from my .com site is 10239 KB and I am unable to upload the export.
 * The information I have says I need to split the file into smaller sizes. My strong
   preference is not to do manual php coding and spend hours debugging it if an
   error occurs.
 * I have tried WP All Import plugin but it breaks the import into segments and
   it is not very straightforward.
 * Also I have Gravity Forms Advanced File Uploader installed but it is not straightforward
   on how to use it for large files.
 * Any suggestions on how to upload it and have WP point to the file? I have thought
   about FTP file transfer but I do not know where to upload it. Then after uploading
   it, how do I point WP to the file?

 * Hi Tara,
 * Thanks for the information.
 * I have read the document from WordPress but it is not that informative. It does
   not address how to cope with common problems and their solutions. In addition
   it is not specific about what needs occur before moving onto the next step. A
   part of the reason I am in in this forum seeking help is because of [http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org](http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#moving-to-wordpress-org)
   lack of detailed information.
 * As for the video, I could not get through the first few minutes. A lot of jabbering
   about basic information that was not relevant to me. I want to know how-to move
   my site instead of information about the difference between .com and .org. In
   my opinion it was not very useful.

 * This is the error message I receive when I try to upload my file:
 * Sorry, there has been an error.
    File is empty. Please upload something more
   substantial. This error could also be caused by uploads being disabled in your
   php.ini or by post_max_size being defined as smaller than upload_max_filesize
   in php.ini.
 * My hosting company has informed me they have increased the php.ini to 15GB for
   me to allow this file to be uploaded.
