    Yes I have done that, but I wonder if I am using the wrong login page for the control panel of a hosted site. I am using “dashboard.wordpress.com …”

    I can still log into the control pannel with the old id. This gives access to the wordpress.com sites but not the hosted site.

    I imagine it might be significant that when I try to reset my password using my new user id which I set up with the hosted site I still get an email concerning the old id.

    I am not sure that I did this correctly, but I changed the 1st line (above the large block of header comments) of functions.php in the folder for the active theme (twentytwelve) from:
    <?php
    to
    <?php: wp_set_password( ‘Temp-Password123’, 1 );

    I uploaded the file but was still unable to log in.

    What happened was that I set up a site on wordpress.com and then set up a copy of it on a hosted site, setting the user id to the one I used with the wordpress.com site. Having shut down my PC and restarted it I was no longer able to get the new site on my control panel.

    I then re-installed wordpress using a new user id. However, I have just found out that having restarted my PC my password no longer works for the new user id. Also when I try to reset it, the email I get refers to the old user id.

    What happened was that I set up a website on WordPress.com then set up a copy of it on a hosted site, setting the user id to the one I used with WordPress.com. Having re-installed WordPress using a new user id things seemed OK.

    However, since I posted my previous message I have found that my password no longer works with the new user id and when I try to re-set the password the email refers to the old user id.

    I have re-installed WordPress successfully using a new user id. The control panel is working well now, better than it was with the old user id. Most importantly there are no problems logging in and working on the new, hosted site.

    With the old id it was not working as well with the page header as it does with the new id or as it did with the old id before my first installation of WordPress.

    Do other people have problems setting their user id for a new, hosted site to the one they use with a wordpress.com site?

    The point is that I still do not understand what went wrong the first time.

    I installed WordPress at gain-grantham.co.uk hosted by Easyspace. I removed it in an attempt to re-install WordPress and get into the Control Panel with the new website.

    It seems wise to find out how I am going to ensure that I can log in after my inital session at the end of the install process before re-installing WordPress.

    1. Should I change the default “admin” id to something like “johnk64” to keep it separate from my wordpress.com sites?

    2. Are there any other measures you would recommend to ensure that I am able to log in a second time?

    Thanks,
    John.

    One question that I think I need to answer before setting up WordPress again on my new site is whether I should be changing the default user name to my existing user name or choosing a separate one.

    1. Would I be allowed to log in with different user names, depending on the site I wanted to work on?

    2. Should changing “admin” to my existing name, Johnk32, bundle all of my websites into one list for the Control Panel?

    1. The new site URL is http://www.gain-grantham.co.uk , though I have my old non-wordpress sit up at present while I wait for the go ahead with MySQL from my host and for me to be confident I know what I am doing well enough.

    2. I changed from Twenty Thirteen to Twenty Twelve having clicked the Log in button on the WordPress setup “Success” window but was unable to log in a second time.

    3. On reflection you are right about Twenty thirteen allowing a static front page, though there does not seem to be a “Front Page Template” option in the Page Attributes of individual pages. Is that choice superfluous for this theme, since it does not have the Full Width Page option either?

    Someone seems to have had a problem logging in after using WP Import. They logged in before doing so. I wonder if I would be better off re-building the website on the new site rather than importing it. It is not huge. Is that likely to be the source of the problem?

    Someone else mentioned the theme as a possible cause of login problems. I changed from the initial Twenty Thirteen to Twenty Twelve.

    I have discovered that the default theme does not give me the look that I want on more than one count, though. It does not seem to allow me to display my header image fully, neither does it seem to allow a static front page or a full width display.

    Thanks for the reply. I have seen some of your posts before.

    I installed my new hosted site at Easyspace. They had to move me to a server with a more up to date PHP for installation to work.

    Hi again,

    This may, or may not, be relevant to logging into the Control Panel, but it is another frustrating experience with WordPress passwords.

    Now I have tried to change my password for this forum but it does not recognise the new password. There was an email with a link for resetting the password but that gave me a message “Invalid key”. I do not know what that means. There was a password already entered (obscured with blobs) which it was not happy with and when I tried to enter a new password there was a drop down option to update password. I think I tried clicking it one time but I am not sure.

    Then a new email arrived with a new password, which worked. I have asked my browser to remember it and do not dare to change it.

    Thanks,
    John.
