Il fut équipé d’une flotte diverse pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale: A-20 Havoc, 1942 * P51 Mustang du 12th TRS P-51/F-6C Mustang, 1942 puis P-51/F-6D Mustang, 1943– 1946 Spitfire PR Mk XI, 1942–1944 L-4 Grasshopper, 1942–1943 DB-7 et A-20 Havoc, 1943 * A leur arrivée en Angleterre fin 1942, les pilotes suivirent un entrainement intensif avec la RAF. Avion en tandem (deux places l’une derrière l’autre), il était au départ simplement destiné à l’apprentissage du pilotage. Mais grâcce à sa simplicité, son faible coût, il est dévenu un des avions les plus populaires et connu de tous les temps. Ceci n’est pas sans rappeller ce que la Ford T est à l’automobile. Lorsque l’Armée américaine chercha un avion de liaison et observation, Piper Aircraft modifia le Piper J3 en agrandissant considérablement la surface vitrée et l’appareil reçu l’appelation de O-59 (1941), puis L-4 (à partir d’avril 1942), et NE (au sein de l’U.S. Navy). * Son rôle et la multiciplicité de ses utilisations fut considérable: Missions de reconnaissance, transport de personnel et matériel sensible, ajustement de tirs d’artilleries, évacuation médicales de soldats blessés. * Pendant la libération de la France en 1944, la vitesse lente du L-et sa manoeuvrabilité en ont fait une plateforme d’observation idéale pour dénicher les tanks allemands cachés en ambuscade dans le bocage normand. * Le 22 aout1944, vers 10h30, Leclerc prend place à bord de son Piper et s’envole pour Laval à la rencontre du général Bradley, seul à pouvoir autoriser la marche de la 2ème DB sur Paris. Le 23 Août, le Piper Cub livre aux Parisiens assiégés le célèbre message du Général Leclerc : « Tenez bon, nous arrivons ». It bugs at the moment there is a link in the first tab section (whatever the anchor link). * Thanks a lot for your help!
