Heck yeah, thanks @vanbom! This is great info. Let me work with it and I’ll follow up if I continue running into trouble.

Really appreciate your help — keep up the excellent work!

Thanks for the update, @shinephp! Is this something that will be added to the next URE release?

Hey @dmccreary! So sorry for the late response here, but we can certainly help you out.

The language files are located in the /lang directory at the root level of the plugin.

You might consider using Loco Translate to help with that. We have some instructions here for you.

    Cheers!

Heck yeah, thanks for all the love and stars! It’s awesome to hear that that you’re not just getting lots of traction with The Events Calendar, but the rest of the plugins in the entire suite — that’s exactly what we like to hear and we’re grateful for your support.

    Cheers to you!

    Hey hey @kuznacic,

Well that is what’s up! You should have seen how the team lit up when we saw your comment come through. You hit the nail on the head as far as what we’re hoping to accomplish with our plugins and we appreciate the heck out of your willingness to share your experience with the wider community.

Like you, I first picked up The Events Calendar as a freelancer (back in 2010) and loved it from the start. Ten years later and it still lights me up to read comments like this.

Here’s to many more years of great WordPress calendars!

Hey friends! Sorry about that. We recently release version 5.0.3.1 which will resolve the issue. Thanks for the heads up!

    Hey @singolfsson,

I just saw your review and thought I’d follow-up to say thanks. The fact that you gave us three stars shows you gave this a lot of thought and I genuinely appreciate the transparency and honesty of your feedback, as does the rest of the team over here.

You raise a lot of excellent points. But it’s this comment that really sticks out for me:

However, it leaves out so many features that it just barely adds any value. If you really want your calendar to be useful, you may need up to several additional $89 purchases, and it will quickly run into several hundred dollars.

Do you think that’s because The Events Calendar lacks features that makes it less effective as a standalone calendar, or because your calendar has specific needs that aren’t directly addressed by the plugin? The reason I ask is because we’ve intentionally tried to pack as much into it as possible. We’ve even received feedback that there is too much offered in the plugin. The fact that we see reviews on both sides of the spectrum tells me that that we’re walking a fine line between trying to offer too little versus offering to much, and the difference has more to do with the specific needs of a calendar than a failure on the plugin to deliver.

Recurring events, custom fields, additional calendar views, venues and organizers, event submissions, ticketing, time zone support, importing, email marketing, integrations with other services… that would be a lot to offer in a single package. And, to be honest, many of those features would be overkill for the majority of use cases — which we’ve learned since first releasing The Events Calendar in 2010 and by staying in touch with people using it and learning from their experiences.

That’s not to say your feedback is incorrect or invalid — it’s more that what you’re looking for in a calendar plugin is likely what we consider to be on the “power user” side of things. And that’s why we’ve chosen to break things up where we offer a solid standalone calendar that’s capable of managing events as well as a free ticketing solution to support it, while offering what we consider to be advanced features as premium extensions. It’s the same thing plugins like WooCommerce, Advanced Custom Fields, Gravity Forms, and a whole host of other plugins do. We benefit because it allows us to give work away in the form of a free plugin without sacrificing sustainability. You benefit in that you can still get the additional functionality you need without having to pay for the core calendar. And everyone else benefits from enjoying a free product that serves the vast majority of needs. It’s tough to create a win-win-win situation, but I think we’re doing a pretty good job and getting better all the time.

But, I get it. No one wants to pay more than they have to or want to. It’s good for us to get this sort of honest feedback and you can rest assured that we’ve not only seen your review and read it, but that we will actually use it as we continue trying to strike that perfect balance.

Cheers to you, and I hope the calendar serves you well! Please stay in touch if you come upon anything else you think would make The Events Calendar even better.

Heck yeah, that’s what’s up! Just wanted to pop in here to say thanks for the great review on behalf of all of us working on the plugin here at Modern Tribe.

    Hi @nickrpb,

Sure thing! You can override any of the plugin’s template files with your own versions. In this case, the specific templates you want are:

    • /tickets/attendees-email.php: The template for the email with the attendee list when integrating with e-commerce plugins (like WooCommerce)
    • /tickets/email.php: Template for the email the customers get when they purchase tickets for an event. This email is the actual ticket people will use at the door of your event.

Here are detailed instructions for overriding templates. Hopefully this gets you exactly what you’re looking for as far as linking up the event and anything you’d like to have in the email.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Hey @nadworks — it’s really great that you shared this feedback. While I’m sorry to hear the calendar failed to meet your expectations, I (and by extension, everyone here on the team) appreciate you giving it a try.

I’m definitely disappointed that a chief concern was needing to use different extensions and add-ons for more functionality or premium features. You’d be amazed how many “reasonable extra options” there are when it comes to managing a calendar of events. There are plenty more ideas for settings that we see (and really like) and have found that offering free extensions is both a great way and popular way to make those available — the same sort of framework and model championed by others, like WooCommerce. It allows us to keep the core calendar easy to maintain for publishers and developers alike, at the same time as preventing an overload of settings. That’s not to say that adding one setting to open links in another tab will tip the scales, but rather the collective whole of it and many other possibilities with it.

And while I totally hear and respect your position on virtual events and how we charge for that extra feature, I do want to push back on it. We did indeed (and still do) offer free extensions that will pull together most of that functionality for you in our Extensions Library. Those are things we put together immediately following the moment that we saw live events start to move online and wanted to make sure anyone running The Events Calendar could make that move. We even made our email marketing service, Promoter, free for three months to help folks communicate those changes with attendees and guests. So when you say something like this:

[…] and you have no shame in making the ability to promote these “virtual events” a premium feature.

…that seems misguided at best and disingenuous at worst seeing as we’ve spent the bulk of the year helping make the transition from live to virtual as seamless as possible. And now that we’ve bundled that work together into a single premium add-on that’s not only more robust but has invested thousands of team hours to create, I think a steeply discounted $35 price tag for a one-stop solution to virtual events is reasonable on top of the rest of what we’re already making available.

It’s absolutely cool if you disagree, but I think it’s important to at least know and see where we’re coming from on this.

With that, I really am grateful you shared your thoughts with us. We’re aware of them as a team and will certainly keep them in mind as we continue working on making the best event management suite for WordPress that we can.

Hi @birger1, thanks for reaching out!

I caught your review and just wanted to let you know we hear you: having Filter Bar in embedded calendar views would indeed be a killer feature. In fact, we’ve discussed it as a team a number of times and would really like to tackle it.

That said, I’d like to elaborate on a couple of things for the sake of context.

First, you’re certainly correct that this is a popular feature request. But it’s not the top. That would be adding support for recurring event support for tickets, which is something we’ve been working on diligently for a while. It’s a massive effort that requires a complete re-write of how recurring events work and our ability to tackle both features at the same time is simply not there. Not an excuse at all, but worth calling out because we are super intentional with our priorities and take all feature requests seriously. Both feature requests are on our long-term roadmap.

Second, I see you’ve given us a 1-star rating for The Events Calendar, but the two features you’re referring to here (filters and embedded views) are actually not part of The Events Calendar plugin — those are paid extras that are available in our Filter Bar and Events Calendar Pro add-ons. While I totally get you’re disappointed with the lack integration between those two add-ons, is there something specific about The Events Calendar itself that led to such a poor review?

If so, please let us know so we can keep making this free plugin as awesome as possible! If not, it’d be great if you’d consider revising your rating to reflect the plugin rather than the premium add-ons.

    > On top, that addon cost the same as the pro version and is only very limited available… dissapointng.

Just to be crystal clear: both Filter Bar and Events Calendar Pro are add-ons to The Events Calendar and offer their own sets of features that enhance the calendar. They’re priced the same and we believe offer extremely valuable benefits that are worthy of those prices. Giving them extra superpowers to integrate together so that filters are included with shortcodes is indeed a fantastic idea — at the same time, I’d argue that doesn’t speak at all to their respective pricing or the quality of The Events Calendar as a free offering.

Again, thanks for dropping a review in here! While we would love to see more stars, it’s always good to know what folks are looking for and we’ll keep doing our part to make the calendar as robust, flexible, performant and secure as possible.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

You’re right on the money there! We love that we can make such a powerful tool freely available to the community. It’s even better when we get this sort of feedback because it’s super affirming of the work we do.

Thanks so much for your support! Enjoy the calendar. 🙂

    Geoff
