Here is the answer. (I think) * In parallel I was having another images problem where images were uploading to the server. In media library, you could see them but on the site they rendered with the ‘image unavailable’ icon. So I escalated that issue to my ISP. * On my site I have user name / password set up to even view the site – while I build out the core of the look and content. In addition, I also have Jetpack installed. * My ISP reduced my view image problem to a conflict between Jetpack and that password protection. In short, I had to remove one of the other. For now, I have disabled Jetpack – and my images just show.
