For some reason the carousel option had unselected and reselecting has fixed the issue for now. Finally found out what the problem was-basically the ubuntu 16.04 downloads an older version of firefox from its default repository-it uses firefox v88 and not the latest version v128!! So I just downloaded the latest version straight from the Mozilla website and it is running wordpress great now. I am able to go to the pages and edit individually-just not from appearances > editor?
