It doesn’t just offend the software author, it’s upsetting to the whole community that RELIES on those authors. * Perhaps the measure of that pain is how *important* WordPress becomes to us, we forget all the effort that goes into creating and maintaining it. * Paleo Pat, I understand being upset. I removed the supercache code from the htaccess file and got the site running again, but am now concerned (terrified? my heart is still fluttering) that the plugin may not work right. * Any suggestions? Aside from a nice break and a cold towel on the forehead? * WHEW. Excellent response. I had one or two minor issues with WordPress 2.7 RC1, which turned out to my fault. The auto-update didn’t work in 2.7 RC1 but- did- in RC2. At all times I had a copy of my source files, uploads and database since I knew I was literally ‘playing with fire’. I think the WordPress team has done a great job of explaining best practices and helping users sort out lame host issues (I’ve seen my share too). Sure it’s frustrating sometimes, but let’s not forget the development team is doing this work for FREE. As are the moderators. I make a lot of money using WordPress and I’m thrilled they keep making it better. The plug-in authors also produce some incredible tools (cforms much?) for next-to-nothing (since people rarely donate). I tried the Ozh Admin plugin – not sure why, but it buswrecked* my site, which is the short route to permanent plugin limbo for me. (* as in scrambled my options table, lucky I had a backup). Maybe the next step is themes for the admin panel? Then users could get their OWN appearance ‘inside’ as well as ‘out’ – I’d vote for that!
