 * This site is beautiful. Sure, it’s rich in graphics, but it loads up quick on
   my cable modem. Being a site primarily for photos I see the need for all the
   graphics. It’s like a rock band site, you don’t want a rock band site to look
   like Kubrick. Sure it’ll load faster, but the folks visiting are looking for
   eye candy. Your site has lots of eye candy, and I mean that in the best way possible.

 * Definately dig the design. Nice graphic work. I’m not one for dropshadows but
   the photos do look good sitting there.

 * OK, I finally found a little time to devote to answering the how I did the categories
   on my [http://vitw.org](http://vitw.org) site. Sorry for the delay. I had to
   deal with the Iraqi elections and such and have been extremely busy developing
   new things.
 * First a word of caution. I did the following changes and additions to my site
   using wordpress 1.3 alpha and I haven’t tried to upgrade to 1.5 alpha yet so
   I’m not sure that what changes I made will transfer over to 1.5 without any problems.
   When I do make the upgrade I’ll let you know how it goes.
 * Here are links to the places that helped me get categories going the way I wanted
   them on my site.
 * 1.) WordPress Modifications, Creating separate category and individual files

   [http://weblog.burningbird.net/archives/2004/07/07/wordpress-modifications/2/](http://weblog.burningbird.net/archives/2004/07/07/wordpress-modifications/2/)
 * 1a.)Also, FYI, Burningbird’s Making the Move from Movable Type to WordPress at
   [http://weblog.burningbird.net/archives/2004/04/14/making-the-move-from-movable-type-to-wordpress/1/](http://weblog.burningbird.net/archives/2004/04/14/making-the-move-from-movable-type-to-wordpress/1/)
   was invaluable to me since I was making that very move.
 * What i did for anyone to look at is I made an example page that displays 3 recent
   posts from 2 differect categories, and then shows the main category I wanted
   shown.
 * Visit [http://vitw.org/libraryWordPress.php](http://vitw.org/libraryWordPress.php)–
   This is the example page that I notated. On that page I’ve included links to
   the code.
 * Also see, [http://vitw.org/libraryWordPress.phps](http://vitw.org/libraryWordPress.phps)–
   This is the example page code.
 * The original page that the Example above is based in is located at [http://vitw.org/library/](http://vitw.org/library/)
 * Anyway, take a look and let me know if this helps, or if anyone needs to view
   another file that I haven’t linked and included in the example page above just
   let me know and I’ll post it.
 * Thanks everyone,
    Scott

 * kordwarshuis,
    No use of a second database. This is what I have at the start
   of the page for the Military Corporate Complex page ([http://vitw.org/mic/](http://vitw.org/mic/))
   which implements multiple categories (Corporate Rule, Military Corporate Complex,
   and Counter Recruitment) to show on that page
 * `<?php

 * Lorelle and all,
    Sorry to say but this is a very busy work week for me. I’ve
   started a small tutorial for the category trick, which isn’t a trick but did
   take me a long time to to figure out and implement. Anyway, I’ll be finishing
   it up by the end of the week, hopefully by friday. Thanks

 * XepoX,
    I use another script for the calendar; [http://www.k5n.us/webcalendar.php](http://www.k5n.us/webcalendar.php)
 * I needed a calendar specifically for events, speaking, art tours, etc. I was
   already familiar with webcalendar so I just folded it into the site.
 * Lorelle, I’ll be getting around to explaining the way I did categories and how
   the right changes dependent upon the category and page sometime this week.

 * Iraq,
    No problem, go ahead and use the graphic. Dr J, No it’s standard in 1.3,
   but I think it’s in 1.2 also, almost positive. In your entry, put the < !– more—
   > tag where you’d like it to cut off.

 * Hi Iraq,
    I created the header with photoshop. You can use other programs similar
   to photoshop, like inkscape ([http://www.inkscape.org/](http://www.inkscape.org/))
   or if you use linux you can try the Gimp. The are both free. My friend, Safaa,
   translated the “Voices in the Wilderness” into arabic, and then we scanned the
   writing and I used photoshop to smooth it out. I found a map of Iraq, then cut
   out the center. I have thousands of photos from Iraq from photojournalists and
   ordinary people that have gone to Iraq as delegates with Voices (starting in
   1996 and through the current occupation) Then I set up a small php script to
   rotate the header so that each time you come to the site 1 of 10 images is shown
   randomly. Hope that answers your question. What’s your blog address? Where in
   Iraq do you live?

 * Cool, clean and grey. Nice design! I personally like the different sized header.

 * Thanks for the comments. It’s been a long time getting familar with WP and converting
   the movabletype over, not to mention the redesign, plus the other part of the
   job, getting articles, writers, interviews, video, etc. And also making it validate
   and the all css layout was a chore, but a great learning experience.
    I do agree
   about the center column being too thin. It was difficult getting all the info
   on that page without the clutter and also keeping the people working with projects
   for us happy with their “spot”. Plus it’s not done just yet. I’ll take the clunkyload
   time into consideration when I get a chance. Thanks everyone. WP rocks.

 * Kubrick with some nice design touches. I learned a bit from starting a design
   with kubrick, but I think it’s too standardized to use. Just my personal opinion
   though.
