    I stripped it down again. This time in 2017 with no plugins the
   coupon code worked, as did paypal (I had it deactivated while I figured things
   out).
 * Now, I turned the theme (TheGem) back on and it appears that the theme is the
   problem. What can I do about this?

   messed up. Could this have anything to do with the Woocommerce update?
