 * not to worry, issue resolved! This plugin required me to add two lines of code
   to my functions.php file:
 * add_custom_background();
    add_streched_background ();
 * These needed to be removed manually before either updating WP or deactivating
   the plugin. Then of course re-adding before I want to use the plugin again.

 * both of those methods don’t work – they also break the website. this one seems
   a bit nasty

 * renaming the folder or deleting it breaks the website too. I get the feeling 
   I need to manually remove all traces of the plugin from both the folder and database.
   Does this solution sound right?
 * If so, is there a guide to removing traces of a plugin from a database?
