I cannot thank you enough. There it was, in the trash!!!! Took me a while to work it all out but the site is now showing as it was.
I’ve lost all the widgets from the side column but can sort in a couple of calm hours this evening. I built this more than three years ago and rarely need to edit – it just ticks along reasonably well. But I can re-lesarn.

The Home page is also not appearing on the pull down menu in Customize.

From your image, yes Reading Settings is set to A Static Page. But, Homepage is not coming up as an option in the dropdown menu. It is showing on the site but just not with the Edit button. [I took a screenshot but can’t work out out to add it here.]
