 * Based on a clue in another post, I’ve removed the bars. However, my complaint
   about this forum still stands.

 * The bars disappear if I enable arrows. To me that’s a bug.

 * I’m sorry to learn that no one actually reads this forum. Or everyone has the
   same problem and no one has any idea how to fix it.

 * Sorry, I didn’t see the initial response. I was able to get past the issue for
   a while but it has now returned. Same behavior.
 * Problem returned after I updated to Fedora 36. Now running wordpress-5.9.3-1.
   fc36 and php-common-8.1.6-1.fc36 (Fedora terminology) and Gutenslider 5.8.2. 
   Trying to remember what I did to get past the issue two months ago.

 * Thanks for the suggestion. No pencil on Appearance > Customize. Going to Appearance
   > Customize > Menus, I see Primary without a “Home” link and, again, no pencil.
   But I also see Top with the notation, “(Currently set to Primary)”. To me that
   seemed to say that clicking Top would not be beneficial as it would be the same
   as clicking Primary. I was surprised to find that it isn’t the same. In fact,
   it included the bogus “Home” link with an opportunity to fix it! (Still no pencil.)
   The problem is fixed.
