 * I discovered the problem also goes away if I add the line `zlib.output_compression
   = On` to php.ini.
 * Edit: Not only does the visual editor begin working again, it does not display
   the custom buttons from buttonsnap.php (but I have another plugin, wordtube, 
   whose button /does/ appear).

 * I have this problem too. It is caused by the use of buttonsnap.php which interferes
   with the tinymce editor. When the plugin is enabled the visual editor does not
   work properly.

 * After a bit of digging I have determined that my problem is caused by the plugin
   WP-ContactForm, specifically, the use of the Buttonsnap Class Library (buttonsnap.
   php) which adds a custom button to the tinymce editor. I suppose I will need 
   to find a new plugin as I do not have the means to try and fix it.

 * Changing
    `'compress' => true,` to `'compress' => false,` fixed it for me on 
   an upgrade from 2.3.1 to 2.5.
