Not trying to usurp @wfpeter by any means 🙂 That’s all 100% good. However, I have created a blog post with screenshots on this problem after I battled with it long ago. I thought it might be helpful for those who need to see it:

Ok. Well I guess this thread is dead 😂
At least it works again. Thanks for your help!
@wfgerald actually…I was just testing this, and it looks like it works now. Do you know if this was a bug addressed by Wordfence or if maybe something else changed with the WP app?
@mykkal It looks like this is working now. I have tested this on 2 sites, with 2FA turned on, and I am able to upload media with the app now. I’m not sure what changed where, but someone fixed something somewhere 🙂 (I hope)
@wfgerald just checking to see if there was anything new on this. Thanks!
whoah, @mykkal 🙂 I wouldn’t call this plugin defective. The Wordfence team is awesome. Just listen to their podcast and read their research. I’m using the free version, and I appreciate the value it adds.
I think we might be onto an issue, and the WF team will eventually find this. I’m willing to help get it resolved. It must not be THAT widespread, or it would be fixed by now.
I’m going to try to reach out to the WF team on Twitter again and see if anyone might be able to put eyes on this now that there are at least 3 of us here with the same reproducible issue.
@wfgerald – anything?
Well…I tried disabling those items and still couldn’t upload to the media library from the app.
Then I tried disabling the Jetpack plugin altogether, and still got the same results. I’m back to square one – 2FA from Wordfence being the only common thread, but I don’t want to disable that.
Here are the only things I have enabled in Jetpack:
-
Security:
- Downtime monitoring
- Anti-spam (activated with valid API key
- nothing
- nothing
- nothing
- nothing
- Site stats -> “Include a small chart in your admin bar with a 48-hour traffic snapshot”
- “Hide the stats smiley face image
The image helps collect stats, but should work when hidden.” - Allow stats reports to be viewed by: Administrator

I made some progress on this issue. I uninstalled the JetPack plugin, and then I could upload media using the WordPress app with Wordfence 2FA enabled. I reinstalled the JetPack plugin, and then could no longer upload media using the WP app. I haven’t had a chance (yet) to go through all the JetPack settings and try disabling them one by one to see if there’s a particular feature that’s causing the conflict.
Maybe someone from the Wordfence team will see this and offer some advice.
Thanks!
@wfgerald – hi, just checking to see if this was being looked into or if there’s anything I can do to help troubleshoot.
Ah! So I’m not the only one. I was feeling pretty lonely with a broken WP app. My site gets hit enough to where I don’t want to disable 2FA.
What have you tried in troubleshooting? I’ve disabled some plugins and created a new account but so success yet.
I’m still having trouble with this. I’ve tried disabling other plugins, but the only time the WordPress app will work correctly now is if I disable 2FA. I also cannot access the Media area of the app anymore. It only shows a handful of images and not all of them, and I can’t upload any new images through the WP app.
I had tested a permission editing plugin a while back, but I ended up removing it. I then had a notification through Wordfence that my user account had been created outside of WordPress (which isn’t entirely true). I then created a new user account completely from scratch and associated my previous account’s content with my new account. Still can’t upload or view media.
Anyone still seeing this message?
@wfgerald I just turned 2FA back on, and I can no longer upload media through the app. Send to be a direct correlation to the 2FA setting.
