I have just tried it with Twenty Fourteen theme and it works as expected. Are you sure the post has that category set? Are you calling the PHP function outside the WordPress post loop? BTW, with the next version I should improve that part. A theme developer chooses where to show the featured image of a post. You can try setting a featured image in a post and to search where it appears.
