That would lead do many security issues the same as storing them in the browser. Worse actually since it is stored in a public space that can be hacked much easier than a local browser who someone who has access to it! In my experience most sites have 150 categories at most. I would suggest cleaning up the categories and checking with your host about the speed of the database connection.
