 * All good now, and not sure what caused it. It turned out that all the geodata/
   coordinates were deleted somewhere along the process of updating plugins, but
   the locations and map records were retained (though empty). Had to do a full 
   restore from backup.

 * Thanks. You put me on the right track. I have found a workaround.
   What happened
   was that I changed the status of one location from published to pending. This
   was the only location in the parent category, and this disabled the filter for
   both the parent and child categories. Not sure how logical it is that a parent
   category needs to have a location to show in the filters? I was assuming that
   it would suffice to have locations only in the children categories. Thanks for
   all your work and brilliant youtube videos!

   filter.
