 * I do have an Akismet key, and it is active. I confirmed this by entering a comment
   using [akismet-guaranteed-spam@example.com](https://wordpress.org/support/users/area9/replies/akismet-guaranteed-spam@example.com?output_format=md)

 * Prior to this test, the “Jetpack has protected your site from __ spam comments”

 * I have reset the Jetpack connection as described.

 * I saw a huge uptick in this with some other WP sites I manage. This always involved
   web hosts that were using nginx as a cache in front of Apache, and it always
   affected the site until the host fixed it. I was never told what they did to
   fix it, but any other sites hosted on the server would have the same issue.
 * This makes me think it has something to do with nginx and/or some improper configuration
   on their end. Especially because the issue was always fixed without intervention
   on my part.
