I gave up on the tiled column layout & changed all the layouts since captions are an option for the thumbnail grid gallery layout. I gave it a try and it kind of works: now the captions show up below the images when hovering over an image. My client wanted me to up up the HTML page so the site wouldn’t look wonky. I’m going to try to relaunch again and hopefully won’t miss a step this time. I hope that’s the culprit! I’m not familiar with it.
