I got the Post Avatar working if I use the Custom Fields section in Edit Post. It doesn’t work if I use the Post Avatar section. As for the comment problem, I’m using Quick Edit to sole the problem for the mean time. No plugins- I deleted the ones that comes with installation, and just the twenty ten theme. I can’t really point out what is causing the problem on my pages..
