 * I’m afraid not, that is the reason why Event sub-categories don’t work: if I 
   assign posts to a second category in addition to Event category they don’t expire
   after event date. I know there’s a trick to expire posts using more Custom Fields,
   but I don’t want my client to have to deal with it.
