Youtube video requires 2 clicks on iOS

  • I ran this through the forum at the longtail website and was told there was nothing that could be done, but wanted to run it by you.

It seems like a fairly significant obstacle to effectively using this with YouTube videos.

That is, on an iPhone or iPod Touch and I am guessing is the same with any iOS – when you click the video icon, it does not play but re-loads again with YouTube’s player, requiring a user to click again to play the video.

I would think most users would think, “that is wierd – that is not very user friendly”, or, “huh, that seems broken”, or something of the sort. Not a good impression you want to portray.

    Sample here: http://designsbytierney.com/blog/2011/09/wordpress-video-tutorials/

But I get the same result when I use HTML5 as the original setting and as such use the YouTube video player, without a playlist. Just seems that is it.

Is there any workaround you know of?

  • We have the same issue on our media sites and have not found anyway around it. the licensed version of JWPlayer doesn’t get rid of it either. I’ve tried other players even and can’t get it to change.

It appears to be the way the code is read on devices that aren’t reading the .flv file. To minimize data transfer the player usually grabs the static image or blank screen fill and puts the ‘Play’ button over the top of the image. It isn’t until you click the first time that it actually seeks the html5 or iOS version to load. Then it plays with the second click.

I realize this doesn’t solve your issue but at least it helps to know you aren’t the only one fighting it.

Do you guys have an example?

look at the video of the Weekly Announcements that is in the lower right corner of the landing page.
It is sourced from our servers and plays on click number one from desktop but takes two clicks on mobile.

    I would update to 5.10 – http://www.longtailvideo.com/order/view

I have 5.10 working. I provided a link above to an example. Here is another, although it may come down in a day or so.

When I said I have 5.10 working, I meant I had that version installed – but it is not “working” without the double click on my iPhone. I assume it is iOS global but do not have other iOS devices. Don’t know about Android.

Yes, for YouTube, this will still require 2 clicks, one to remove our shell, one to play the video on YouTube. However, I don’t think this will be the case for JW6, here is an example – http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/jw-player/29236/basic-youtube-stream, we are working on updating the WP plugin to support JW6 as well.

Do you have a time table for that? Just a rough idea?

I am not sure of the exact ETA but we are hoping sometime in Feb…please don’t quote me on that though 🙂

We’re actually about done with the implementation and moving to testing. If you can email support [at] longtailvideo, we’d be happy to send you a beta release.

Thank you. As it turns out, given the dramatic price hike in the JW player for JW6, I won’t be upgrading anytime soon – sad for me really.

One you email us, we will forward your messages along so you guys can test this out. 🙂
