Your server is running PHP version 4.4.9 but WordPress 3.3.1 requires at least 5

    So I looked at my hosting company’s site, 1and1, and found where I could switch from 4 to 5, so I did that. Then I get the message:

    Error establishing a database connection

    Thinking it might matter, I created a new database from scratch and tried again, but still get the cannot connect message. The database shows that it is using MySQL 5.0.

    Ideas?

    Check your database host name.

    I was about to respond, “what do you think I am, a moron?” but decided to go back and triple check. When I did, I discovered that although I thought the entries were correct (they were all very much the same), the username had an extra character in the middle of it. Fixed it, and got it fine.

    Thanks for making me check the obvious that I had checked before.

    Yep – from what I recall, the 1&1 db names and usernames are pretty complex and it’s so easy to make a mistake. Glad to hear that you’ve got it sorted now. 🙂
