    Hello

Lately, blocking of users has been massive.

The error “Your access to this site has been temporarily limited by the site owner”, appears on a daily basis, and often many users at the same time. I have around 150-200 users daily, so this is not optional. See picture of error:

Even today I was blocked from the site. I am the site owner/administrator, so it caused a lot of issues. I am aware of, that after a few minutes (10-15), often users can enter the site again.

But this morning I had to deactive Wordfence as soon as I could enter again, as to many users was blocked. It was with reluctant, as it is very important to protect my site with a security plugin, but this is not optional.

How can I use Wordfence on my website without users (including myself) getting blocked on a daily basis?

    Thanks in advance.

    /Sheila

Hi @sheilanana, thanks for reaching out to us.

Multiple blocking of users, including the administrator sounds like a case of IP detection being incorrect for your site. If it’s been running for a long period without issue, it’s possible that your host added something like a load balancer, proxy, or firewall to your site and Wordfence is detecting that. When a single IP is detected for many users, one block will block everybody in a similar way to your description.

Take note of your own IP – (note that this detection can sometimes not be 100% accurate on cellular phone network connections): https://www.whatsmyip.org

Head over to Wordfence > All Options > General Wordfence Options > How does Wordfence get IPs and reference the area under that section that says Detected IPs and Your IP with this setting. Start from the top and check to see if any of the settings show that both of those show the same IP as the site above does.

Let me know how you get on!

    Peter.

    Hi Peter

I tried what you said, but it seems like the IP address match:

But I believe maybe we have 3 different IP adresses:
    – 193.3.142.123
    – 193.3.141.124
    – 193.3.142.125

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi @sheilanana,

That looks correct, so perhaps wasn’t the issue if you didn’t need to change anything to make them match. Could you try looking at your Wordfence > Live Traffic page and seeing what the reason given for the 503 blocked messages are? Users might be falling foul of strict Rate Limiting/Brute Force settings, or something else less common.

You can expand Live Traffic entries by clicking on them, where the reason will be given in red text.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
