    Hi,

We’ve been using Wordfence for a while now without any serious issues.
However, lately we’re sometimes getting this notification on our homepage: “Your access to this site has been limited by the site owner. HTTP response code 503.”

This is shown to all users who visit the website. It usually lasts for a few minutes (about 15) and then everything just starts working again on its own.

    What can be the issue?

    Thanks!

Hi @icola007, thanks for reaching out to us!

It sounds like this could be related to rate-limiting as 503s tend to occur when the site is receiving multiple requests in quick succession: https://www.wordfence.com/help/firewall/rate-limiting/

When you check Wordfence > All options > Rate-limiting do any of your options show the warning, Very strict. May cause false positives.? If so, the rule may need relaxing to not block legitimate visitors quite so readily if they are clicking through your site. Also under this section, you will see How long is an IP address blocked when it breaks a rule, which is possibly set to the 15 minute interval you’re seeing the site blocked for.

When you speak of ALL users being affected by this, there could be an issue now with how your site is detecting IPs. If something such as server software or hosting provider has recently changed, that could explain why this is now causing issues. If you look at Wordfence Dashboard > Global Options > General Wordfence Options > How does Wordfence get IPs, it should display your public IP address (discoverable on https://www.whatsmyip.org/). If it does not, then the issue you’re seeing might be blocking multiple users erroneously detected to be from the same IP. Cycle through the options until it does display your public IP address. That will be the setting you need to use going forward, so click the SAVE button once you’re done.

If neither of these seem to be the cause of a problem, can you send a diagnostic report to wftest @ wordfence . com? You can find the link to do so at the top of the Wordfence Tools > Diagnostics page. Then click on “Send Report by Email”. Please add your forum username where indicated and respond here after you have sent it.

Note: For the fastest response time, please make sure and add any information or questions directly to this topic and not the email address above unless asked.

    Thanks,

    Peter.
