I have WordPress installed on Fasthosts and have a very odd problem.

When logged into the dashboard as an administrator and I try to access the ‘updates’ page I get the following error:

    Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /wp-admin/update-core.php on this server.

It shows the number of updates (if any) and I can update them via the appropriate page (themes / plugins etc… ) so everything is working apart from accessing that particular page.

Any ideas how to fix it?

  • Are you certain that all your WP folders are CHMOD’ed to 755 and your WP files are CHMOD’ed to 644.

Also, have you tested the site with firewalls (either on the server or a WP plugin) disabled?

    Sorry for the delay.

I’ve checked via Filezilla and it appears all the folders and files have file permissions of 700 (so the files aren’t 644). If I just try to update the update-core.php file to 644 it appears to accept it but when I check again it’s back to 700 (same if I try to update a folder permissions)? Is the hosting provider over riding it? If the rest of the site is working, then is the 644/700 not really an issue?

That sounds like something to ask your hosting provider. WordPress is clear about the file permissions it requires, so it behooves you to start by setting them correctly, permanently.
