You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.

  • I am running WP 3.1 and I am running into an issue that has stumped me for a few days now. When I try to login to my site, I receive an error message that states: “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.” The reason this is stumping me is because the second time I try login, there is no problem.

I registered for a dummy account and the exact same thing happens. The error message for the first login attempt and then nothing wrong on the second attempt.

Any advice is appreciated in advance!

    Thanks

It most likely has to do with the redirect. WP does not like redirects because of the dynamic nature of the program.

Also you notice if you try to go back to the site (upper left corner) it doesn’t work either.

    Thanks for the look!

I see what you mean about the top left corner text, same thing though, the 1st click on it takes you nowhere but the second time will work.

Any advice on where to start fixing the redirect issue?

    Thank you

    Have you tried:

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. You may need to try logging into your site to get this to kick in fully.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or phpMyAdmin.

Are you suggesting that I rename my current theme to Twenty Ten? Sorry for the misunderstanding of the statement.

No. Rename your current theme’s folder to something other than its current name. Try adding -old onto the folder name.

I tried both options but had no luck 🙁 I’m going to try and reinstall and see if that tackles the issue…unless there is something else I could try?

Remember, this is more than a permissions problem. The same thing occurs when you try to go back to the site with the text in the upper left.

Definitely what esmi suggested solves/finds most of the problems but the WP and redirect issues have been with WP since day one because of the way pages are built.

There is a redirect plugin. I am not sure if that is the answer but something else you might look at. Also you can handle some redirects in the .htaccess file if appropriate.

    Good luck on the quest!

Another thing that I just thought of, is that when I login as admin I am still getting this error. That is the part that isn’t making any sense to me. I understand if another user of the site would have some problems viewing certain pages because it would be a permission error on my end, but it is odd that every user and the admin account get the error on the 1st attempt and then on the second attempt it is fine (as if WP realized it’s mistake the second time around…lol)

I am going to try the redirect plugin 1st to see if that does anything. If that isn’ resolution , I will continue to troubleshoot with the link that was provided and see if there is anything that will solve my issue with that.

If all fail the test, I am going to reinstall everything from the mysql_db to the wp_db 🙁 Oh well. I hope it doesn’t come to that.

At any rate, thank you guys for all the help with this and hopefully I can get this resolved at some point tonight.
