I’ve installed WordPress for the first time in a sub-directory of my website. The installation seemed to go fine, and I can see the “Hello world” page.

When I try to log in as admin using the password that I’d set I get the error “You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.” If I go back to the “Hello world page” I seem to be logged in (I have a log out button) but clicking on the “Site admin” button gives me the same error.

I installed WordPress using Fantastico, supplied by my hosting provided and got this message, so I deleted everything, including the database, then downloaded WordPress and installed it manually and got the same result.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I can find plenty of discussions of people getting this message, but they all seem to be on existing installations, not straight after installation.

Thanks for the link. I’d already seen that page, but it mostly seemed relevant to people with existing installations, not new, clean installations. It also refers to an older version of WP with an older db_version number.

I’ve found the problem now. [site_url]/wp_admin was not working, but putting in [site_url]/wp_admin/index.php manually did work.

I’ve put a one line .htaccess file in the wp_admin directory, just containing DirectoryIndex index.php and it seems to be working.
