  • Hey there Spencario – Rob from Modern Tribe here. I saw this review come through and wanted to get you a reply to both thank you for taking then time to provide this feedback, and to apologize for your poor experience. Naturally it always sucks to receive a 1 star review – especially for a feature that best I can tell the plugin never claims to ship with from the offset – but I am hoping I can shed some light on our reasoning here and help you out a bit. The fact that we neglected to communicate that this was how the plugin functioned before you even downloaded it – so as not to waste your time – means we failed you here, and I apologize on behalf of the whole team for that.

You make a really great point in this brief review. While we originally designed the plugin to live at the /events page based on feedback from the community, it does ship with widgets (how many depends on whether you’re using the premium or free release) that can be placed where you want them within your theme’s framework under Appearance -> Widgets. There is also a free add-on one of our core devs built to test some exploratory features, and one of them is the ability to embed widgets via shortcodes. (If this does well in the community we will certainly consider porting these changes over to the core plugin). That can be accessed at https://wordpress.org/plugins/event-rocket/, and the docs regarding embeds specifically are at https://github.com/barryhughes/event-rocket/wiki/Embed-Events. We still do not have and currently have no plans for a straight up calendar embed, though, since given how the plugin is architected that’d require some fairly substantial overhauling. That said, if enough of the community pushes for it and shares your feedback here, we will explore this too.

Out of curiosity, was this concern the only reason you gave the plugin 1-star? Or were there other elements you found problematic? Totally understandable if you’ve since moved onto another plugin and don’t have the time/interest to reply here, but I’d love to hear more from you if you do – usually a 1-star review is the byproduct of a number of complaints, not just one, so if there are other issues I’d like to get them addressed to ensure nobody else faces your same disappointment down the road.

Either way, thanks for the feedback and for helping us improve. I wish you the best of luck in finding a calendar solution that better meets your needs and hope someday down the road we can earn back your trust.

Honestly, you probably got a raw deal here. I had used two other calendars and both failed me miserably and I have been very frustrated with the difficulty of getting a working calendar for embedding.
I am willing to pay for a solution and paid for the other plugins. Just no solution. I need an embeddable calendar that looks as good as yours does. It has to be embedded though. Honestly, your app is far better than Timely’s but theirs embeds. Problem is, theirs crashed my entire site causing me to start over. I dont really want to go back to them but they are the only solution I can find so far.
Tell me a way, and I will change or delete this review. Thank you for your soft response….shows a lot of character and makes your company stand out well.

    Spencario,
The Event Rocket add-on that Rob referenced will allow you to embed the calendar widgets, just not the full calendar. I’d suggest giving that a shot and see if it will get you where you need to be.

    Take a look here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/event-rocket/faq/

    Thanks, Casey 🙂

Spencario: it was extremely generous of you to come back in here and elaborate on your thoughts from the first review…I really appreciate that, and can totally understand where you’re coming from.

Did Event Rocket help get you where you wanted to be?

I would put my name on this list that says I would use your plugin if it was an embedable option. Otherwise, I’m out as well…

    +1 for embeddable.

I would be fine with the event page if it wasn’t breaking the theme that I’m using. The header of the theme is not being rendered as is should on the event page with the undesired look and break in functionality (as far as the header is concerned).

If the event page is being added as a post (not a page) it should not interfere with the rendering of pages. Unfortunately that seems to be the case.

At this time given the simple use required on the site, the free plugin is fine for the client for whom I am putting together the site, but I liked the option to be able to go pro and extend the plugin with additional components… modular is the way to go here.

Haven’t tried the rocket, but since that’s experimental and unsupported is not something I’d be willing to implement in the client’s site due to the risk of that breaking on future WP upgrades or other reasons. Experimental/unsupported is not something I’d use on production sites.

Thanks again for your reply and keeping the support on this forum. Much appreciated.

Followup… actually tried the Event Rocket but it would simply show a list (calendar is supported only on pro version) with an “All Events” link to the event page (unwanted as that’s messed up as mentioned earlier) which in the end would equate to going about posting a schedule in the most complex vogonian way to merely end up with a list being displayed on a page… and that’s something one could create within the page itself, rendering the use of the event calendar plugin and the event rocket widget an exercise in futility. Really unfortunate that the an executive decision was made to have the calendar event plugin work in the way it does now. I can see why many users are passing on it simply due to the inability of embedding a simple event calendar or list within their own template. Allowing proper “shortcode embeddability” within the plugin itself would make it the plugin of choice for event calendaring needs… truly a shame that’s not already available.
