  • It is happening because Yoast decided they will not support WordPress below 4.9.8 and PHP < 7.0
and after a number of complaints, they are planning to add backward compatibility at least that’s what they said and its been 3 weeks

So what should we do, except upgrading PHP ?

You need to upgrade both PHP and WP to the latest version nothing else you can do, in any case by now you already should be PHP7.0 and above

@cinghaman, Thanks for that insight! I did not expect that kind of change to be made without notice.

    @cinghaman I’ll have a try, thanks ^_^

I upgraded PHP but this message appeared
Your PHP installation appears to be missing the MySQL extension which is required by WordPress.
Does anyone have a solution ?!

I have same problem and I can confirm that is not related to PHP version because on same server i have few WP and only one had this issue!

So, what is the real problem ?!

I cant tell what is causing this problem.
I’m thinking to restore some old backup to check.
Not sure when exactly this appeared.
    It was fine last week.

    Strange!
    Now is working!
Not sure how i did it because deactivate the yoast and I removed some old plugins and after that activate Google XML sitemaps.
After few hours I re-activate yoast and found it’s working again.
    Hmmm…

@dragoscristache Can you please confirm whether this issue still occurs when you are using the most recent Yoast v9.3? You can learn more about updating here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/how-can-i-update-my-free-plugin/

@a7madmayo As this issue can occur for a number of different reasons (plugin conflicts, WordPress version, etc) we would recommend creating a new issue so that we can better track the issue.

@masterross Thanks for confirming that you were able to resolve the issue and that the metabox is now working as expected.

    Hello,

@devnihil I can confirm that everything works fine, now that I updated to WordPress 4.9 and Yoast 9.3 – all running on PHP7.0.

On WP 4.8.7 and Yoast 9.2.1 and PHP7.0 the problem is still present.

The problem is that on some websites we can’t yet update to 4.9 and Yoast 9.3 requires WP 4.9.

We tested Yoast SEO 9.3 on a WordPress 4.8.7 site and found it working when using Firefox. Can you test it on your end?

    Hello @jerparx,

There’s no update available for Yoast on WP 4.8.7. Should I do an update of the plugin via FTP?

    Later update:

I updated Yoast to 9.3 and it works fine on WP 4.8.7 with PHP7, both Chrome and Firefox.

Glad to know it worked! We’ll now be tagging this as resolved.
