Support » Fixing WordPress » Yoast – How to avoid duplicate titles & meta descriptions

  • Hi,

Problem: Duplicate titles & meta descriptions
    Observations:

    1. My theme configuration:

    <title><?php wp_title(''); ?></title>
    <meta name="description" content=" <?php if ( is_single() ) { the_excerpt(); } else { echo'Let Them Stare is offering dresses, skirts & more as free giveaways. Each time you leave a comment, you’re automatically entered in our weekly drawing'; } ?>" />

    2. Yoast configuration:

    a. Homepage > Title template: %%sitename%% %%page%%
    b. Homepage > Meta description template: I’ve tried to add %%page%%
left it blank, nothing changed the meta description on pages /page/2/, /page/3/ and so forth.
    c. Pages > Title template: Page %%pagenumber%%
    d. Pages > Meta description template: Page %%pagenumber%% | %%excerpt%%

How should I configure yoast homepage and pages titles & meta descriptions in order to avoid duplicate content?

    Thanks and regards,

    Kfir Silis

Can you post a link that creates duplicate meta tags/ content. Please note that duplicate content and duplicate meta tags are quite different for SEO purposes.

    sure

    Meta tags report for: http://www.letthemstare.com/page/2/
    meta tag length value

Title: 75 GIVEAWAY – Dresses, Skirts & More Given away Free | Let them stare – Page 2

Description: 151 Let Them Stare is offering dresses, skirts & more as free giveaways. Each time you leave a comment, you’re automatically entered in our weekly drawing

I’ve managed to overcome page titles duplicates but as per meta description I still have duplicate content. I don’t know how to fix it.

But I cannot check what actually is the problem because scanning tools return results like this. It will be a good idea to validate your site/ pages, to begin with.

    Read: http://codex.wordpress.org/Validating_a_Website

On the meta description, I’ve used an illegal char:

    “Each time you leave a comment, you’re … “

I removed the ‘ char and now validation is running.

OK, it seems you removed the characters added to UTF parameters. Anyway, I can see the validation page now. Here it is. Scroll down to the source codes and verify. I do not find duplicate meta description or meta title tags. Please check and report back.

As you can see the page and the homepage has the same description.
How can I change the page description of /page/2/, /page/3/?
It’s always remain the same as my homepage.

Sure. It is going to create problems and will be listed by Google at your Webmaster Tools account. Did you try the different settings at the SEO settings?

    I hope this helps: http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/

I’ve tried almost anything on yoast configuration page.
None of the changes I’ve made on the page meta description has success in changing the current status. Is there any specific configuration I should try?

If you made changes, it takes time to come in search results, though you may check the changes using other tools that show the changes immediately.
