Support » Plugin: Yoast SEO » Yoast does not see the htaccess and doesn’t edit it.

  • Resolved ertott

I tried to edit the file through your plugin, but it redirected to page 404.

First, I checked the site on various services like gtmetrix/pagespeed. They didn’t see the results of htaccess’s rules. Then I turned off the plugin and the services saw the caching rules in the real htaccess on my hosting.

Now I have installed the plugin Htaccess File Editor and your plugin has finally started to see the real htaccess/right vurtual htaccess.

@ertott We’re sorry to hear you are experiencing this issue on your site.

Can you please let us know at what point you received a 404 when attempting to edit your site’s .htaccess file using Yoast SEO?

You can edit the .htaccess file by performing the following steps:

      • In WordPress, go to SEO>Tools
      • Click on ‘File Editor’
      • Under ‘.htaccess’ beneath ‘Edit the content of your .htaccess’ is a field from which you can directly edit your .htaccess file
      • After making any changes to the file, click ‘Save changes to .htaccess’

We also have more information on this and editing the .htaccess file using Yoast SEO here:

Also, if you are trying to edit the .htaccess file using Yoast and you do not see the ‘File Editor’ option in SEO>Tools, this may mean that file editing is disabled on your WordPress installation. If file editing is disabled, please enable file editing.

You can find more information on disabling file editing in WordPress at and here:
