Appaprently the blank line at the beginning is causing the problem. Have seen this problem several times on forum with no apparent solution.

Could it be because my hosting site is a free site and the header at the top is adding an extra line?

  • Ususually that’s caused by the blank line or empty space after the closing ?> mark in your wp-config.php file.

Unlikely. It adds that using script at the end of the code.

Most likely situation is a blank line at the top or bottom of a plugin or the wp-config.php file. Look at your plugin files and the wp-config file, and try to find a blank line either before the initial <?php or after the final ?> marks. If you find any blank lines there, remove them.

I have tried all of the suggestions above with no success. I did a fresh install of WP at a different (paid) domain and am moving the DB and custom stuff over. It works now. Thanks for the assistance.
