    I have just copied my local wordpress website from my pc to my laptop, including all files and the database. The config file, htaccess and settings are all exactly the same.

    On the laptop, everything works fine on the front page, but every other page and post throws up a 404 not found error. When I set my permalink structure to default everything works again! But when I customise it, only the homepage works. The permalink structure works fine on the pc, but not the laptop.

    What am I doing wrong?

  • are you sure an .htaccess is being generated when you switch permalinks?

    Yes, I had it open while I was changing the format of the permalinks and each time I went back to it, it said it had changed and asked if I want to load the new one.

    I don’t understand why it’s not working as the setup is exactly the same. The only difference between my laptop and my pc is that my pc is using a slightly older version of Wamp.

    Solved!

    I found the answer in the excellent WordPress Codex.

    Turns out I just needed to replace some code in the httpd.conf file with this:

    <Directory />
    Options FollowSymLinks
    AllowOverride All
    </Directory>

    Thanks. Hope this helps anyone else with this prob
