  • Does Yahoo just suck when it comes to hosting WordPress or is there a way to fix it? I’ve had numerous problems and they say they can’t help because WordPress isn’t there program but i’m sure it’s there shitty server.

    The site loads slow and will sometimes not load for hours on end, I run an online mag and can’t afford to keep having it down at random times. Can anyone help?

  • Ideas:

    Disable all plugins and switch to the default theme to see if that speeds things up. If it does, then you may have a problem with one of them.

    Try a different web host. I’ve been through several of them, and even though it costs more, I now pay month to month to avoid being stuck with deteriorating service.

    I pay month to month also with Yahoo. Do you have any suggestions for good servers that host WordPress well.

    Do you have any suggestions for good servers that host WordPress well.

    That will depend on what you are willing to pay. If it’s $5 a month, then Godaddy is about what you can expect. If it’s $100 a month, then you can get a nice VPS with a host like Liquid web that will do you very nicely.

    I have the same problem. I started a post here (no responses yet)http://wordpress.org/support/topic/284283?replies=1#post-1117648

    In another post, I found that WordPress needs MySQL 4.0 or higher.
    I looked at what I had on Yahoo…
    * PHP version 4.3.11
    * MySQL client version: 3.23.49
    * Server version: 4.1.14

    I wrote to Yahoo and their response was they don’t support this. I’ve been with them since 2003 and thus far been very happy. If there was just some way to upgrade the client side MySQL, I would stay with Yahoo.

    Figaro- Can you recommend a host in the $15/month range that offers unlimited storage, at least 10 emails, and multiple URLs ?

    I have just moved a client from Yahoo because it really sucks when comes to database connectivity.

    Bluehost for $7/month is excellent for WordPress.

    I use HostGator, and so far they have been okay.

    I also agree that Bluehost has been a great host for me. I have several WordPress installations with them. I notice you asked for one that offers unlimited “storage.” Just clarifying–Bluehost does offer unlimited hosting space for all of your sites and content for/related to them, but does not let that space be used as storage to store whatever personal files and/or backups you want.

    bh_WP_fan – How easy/difficult is it to transfer my files to Bluehost? Do I just make a back up of my Yahoo directories and import them in to Bluehost?

    I have 3 websites, plus 2 blogs running on Yahoo right now. The three websites have their own domain names. The 2 blogs are under one of the domain names. Would Bluehost let me have use the 3 domain names and redirect 2 to subdomains under the main domain?

    I really appreciate any advise. I’m not very knowledgeable in servers and hosting… hence why I started with Yahoo. It was very very easy, until the database issue.

    Yes, Bluehost would let you have your domains and subdomains. Migrating isn’t all too difficult. The most important part is getting your database backed up. Your database is what contains all of your content. If you lose your themes or plugins you can always go get them again, but if your database is lost… its gone.

    You would start off by signing up with Bluehost with any one of your domains. Once you have the account you can add the other domains to the account as well. You do not actually want to switch your hosting to them just yet, though. First you want to install WordPress for each of your domains, or, to test things out, you can do everything with just one domain first and then go from there.

    You can use this to show you how to install with Bluehost: http://tutorials.bluehost.com/wordpress/
    Then you can use this to know how to backup and import your database into the new installation: http://tutorials.bluehost.com/movewordpress/ (Note the WordPress version is a little out of date in the tutorial, but the steps are still the same)

    After you have imported your database, if you have custom themes or plugins you want moved over from your previous account, backup your previous wp-content directory, then upload this over the top of the wp-content directory which was created for you in your WordPress install at Bluehost.
