My Yoast SEO plugin is not excluding pages/posts when I entered the page/post ID in XML Sitemaps. When I went into the Yoast SEO dashboard, I found this message:

The following file(s) is/are blocking your XML sitemaps from working properly:
    /var/www/vhosts/racca.asn.au/httpdocs/sitemap.xml
Either delete them (this can be done with the “Fix it” button) or disable Yoast SEO XML sitemaps.

Now I haven’t pressed the fix it button because I’m worried it will affect my current sitemap and the website as a whole. Can anyone please provide me with any information on what to do or if they have been in this situation? Should I press the fix it button?

    Thank you.

  • If you have the file, remove it via FTP. Or you can try the ‘fix it’ option.

Upshot – you can’t have two directives to two different sitemap ‘index’ files from WP, when using Yoast in default setup.

So if I press the “fix it” button it won’t affect the website or current site map?

My concern is if I press the “fix it” button it might the website or current site map similarly to how sometimes certain plugin updates can cause technical problems.

*might effect the website or current site map

    a) make full backup of your site and dbase; you should be doing this prior to making any major changes to your website like new theme, new version of WP, using Yoast SEO, etc.

    b) learn to use FTP to “look” at what is actually on your website, and if the old sitemap file created by some other plugin is there, remove it.
