I searched the topics but didn’t find answers to my specific questions, which are quite general in nature. A few weeks back I copied and pasted my xml sitemaps that Yoast “created” to my Google Search Console. My three questions are as follows:

    1) I notice that Yoast created a xml sitemap of my site – but when I click on XML Sitemap in Yoast it lists 5 “items” (such as https://mysite.com/post-sitemap.xml), However … I can click on each one of those five (such as the one above) and I see a couple of dozen urls IN EACH ONE. Question #1: do I simply copy the “folder” for each one over to Google (in other words just the five main ones such as the one above) or must I drill down and copy all of the url’s INSIDE EACH ONE OF THE FIVE over to Google?

    2) I’m assuming Yoast automatically updates my sitemaps going forward, within my plugin. Questions #2: Is this correct? Does it do this every time I make a change or on a schedule such as once a month?

    3) Getting the updated sitemap over to Google: Question #3: If Yoast updates the sitemap, must I every month or so, if I’ve made changes to my site such as added posts to my Blog etc, copy the sitemap manually all over again to Google, or is this updated sitemap sent to Google Search Console automatically?

Thanks for your help and forgive my ignorance. 🙂

  • 1) Yoast SEO automatically generates multiple sitemaps for your website, one sitemap per post type and taxonomy. You only need to submit your sitemap index to Google Search Console. Google will automatically parse all the sub-sitemaps and the URLs listed inside them. Please, refer to this KB article for more information: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/submit-sitemap-search-engines/#google
2 and 3) You only need to submit your sitemap manually to Google the first time. After that, whenever you publish new content or update/delete your existing content on your website, our plugin will update the XML sitemap and automatically ping Google about the new changes.
