• hi. i have just installed wp to a hosted service and have tried to install the importer. First I had problems installing the importer and it said it couldn’t create the folder path below. So I manually created it within file manager in my cpanel and manually installed the importer and activated it. That seemed to work but now when I go to import my wxr file, I get the following:-

The uploaded file could not be moved to /home/londones/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10

it seems like their is not a proper connection to my webhost as the wxr is only 100kb.

I tried to manually upload the wxr file to the 2010/10 folder but my blog is just a blank blog and I can’t work out how to get my old blog which i exported from wordpress.com to import successfully.

    Can you help?

    Many thanks.

  • Change the permissions on the wp-content directory to 766. If you still have problems, try 767 or 777. Once your uploads are working, change the permissions on wp-content back to 755 again and check that everything still works OK.

This may have some bearing on the problem. What error message did you get?

    pink error box with

Before you can upload your import file, you will need to fix the following error:

Unable to create directory /home/londones/public_html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/10. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

i then went in to create my own folder called uploads with 2010 and 10 sub directories.

OK – delete the uploads folder. Then follow the instructions I gave above regarding changing permissions on the wp-content folder. You have to let WP create the folders itself.

is it just the index file in wp-content that permissions ned to be changed? if yes, is there anything else that i could try?

No – you need to change the permissions on the folder and all files within it.
