I agree, the best way is to look at some simple plugins and learn from it ^^

Thanks very much for the pointers and tips, folks. ANd I’m sorry to be so long extending my thanks — been working overtime and had no chance to follow up on this.
I tried modifying the widget I’ve got installed on my site but it’s one of the google widgets and I can’t seem to make it work if I make substantive changes. I’ll try to build one up specifically.
