Support » Everything else WordPress » WPmu vs. 3.0 – what’s the difference?

  • I’ve been planning a multi-blog website for which wpmu would be appropriate. However, seeing that the up-and-coming v3.0 will basically be incorporating wpmu, I’m wondering if I should wait for that, or will there even be any difference.

Will the two projects follow different development paths or is wpmu basically being absorbed by 3.0? Will they remain “separate” (though the division is small as it is) or will wpmu as we know it basically “go away” and become merely a standard feature of 3.0?

I guess my question basically boils down to wondering whether to start with wpmu or wait for 3.0? Also very important to know if wpmu will indeed get absorbed in the 3.0 release, will I be able to update wpmu to wp3.0?

(Apologies if this has already been addressed in a different thread, I couldn’t find answer to this specific question via search)

We talked about it in the mu forums is why. 🙂

MU is going away, there will be only one codebase going forward. You can start with mu now, or the beta of 3.0 if you want.

Considering there are thousands of large WPMU based sites out there, the upgrade to 3.0 going smoothly was a huge priority.

Hi @andrea_r 🙂 Upgrading test install of WPMU 2.9.2 to WP 3.0 beta1 had been less work than upgrading test install of WP 2.9.2 to WP 3.0 beta1 where I had to add necessary thingy to wp-config.php and then having to go through setting it up in WP admin panel. Thanks to WP/Mu Devs including @wpmuguru 🙂
