WPML and multisite?

  • In a multisite network, I need multilingual blogs. I use a theme that supports languages combined with WPML plugin.

But I was wondering if this is the best way because WPML changes how WP store the data in the database and I don’t like it because the blog will never can work without this plugin.

So perhaps the best way (or cleanest way) is to have a theme that supports languages and create sites separately for each language, for example:

    http://www.blogs.es/site-es
    http://www.blogs.es/site-en

    What do you think?

    Thanks!

When you create a translated post, or category with wpml you have in fact created a wordpress post or category, what wpml does is to associate the posts as being related by language. When you de-activate wpml, the translations remain as ordinary wordpress posts and categories, but mixed together. This holds true for more language plugins. If you would like to have separate sites for your wpml posts you can import the whole database into a new install and delete all the posts from the languages you don’t need in the wp-admin.

I prefer multisite and one of these plugins:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/multisite-language-switcher/
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/multilingual-press/

When you deactivate one of these you still have two language sites where all language posts are still seperate.

I don’t now if wpml has the ability to just export posts from one language though?

You are right, if you desactivate the plugin, the posts are showed all together… I understand then.

    thanks for your help!
