• Hi,

I recently designed a portfolio site for myself using WPfolio: http://www.clnswp.org. I haven’t made a web page since the era of dreamweaver and hand-coding HTML, so it’s actually been a pretty steep learning curve understanding how wordpress is organized and I appreciate your project. I deliberated about using indexhibit but ultimately decided to shop local instead. I’m still trying to figure out how to make it do what I want and whether it’s as flexible as I’d hoped.

I’ve read the instructions thoroughly on the WPfolio wiki and here are a few questions I’ve not been able to resolve:

    1. I just published a bunch of my posts I’ve categorized as projects. Your instructions say WPfolio will take the first image in a gallery as thumbnail for the category view (here “projects”), but it’s taken all the wrong ones. Literally, humorously, the second image or later. It looks much worse this way. How do I correct it?

    2. Related to this, I changed display to show more than 10 posts on one page, and now there’s a weird spacing where there posts are shown four across, except the top row which is only two with a gap. Can I make the top row display as four across and the bottom row the one that only shows two?

Less pressing but can’t find the answer:
    3. In WPfolio can I make WP recognize a single image in a post as a gallery? Two needs: so it will open in lightbox, and so for some of the videos I’ve posted I don’t need to have multiple redundant stills along with the vimeo clip.

    thanks,
    benj

  • Benj,

First, the site looks really nice.

    1. Not sure why it’s grabbing the second image. Just built a site with this yesterday and didn’t have that problem so I’m not sure what’s causing it. For the sake of troubleshooting, have you tried reordering the images in the wordpress gallery uploader and saving the changes? You can drag and drop them. I’m curious if this would affect it.

Also, for a page like this:
    http://www.clnswp.org/2009/01/room-of-the-sun/
you can choose to have the images go 4 across. You might know this already…

    2. I’m seeing here:
    http://www.clnswp.org/category/projects/
a grid of 12. 4 posts displayed across and 3 down. Did you work out a solution?

    3. Yeah I believe so. You can also choose to show, say, the medium size image and include a link to the large version, and specify that it open with lightbox. Basically, you can do an individual image without using gallery and still get the lightbox.

    Hope all this makes sense.

P.S. I recognize your work from somewhere. And I will be at CAA too, so maybe I’ll see you there.

    Steve,

Thanks for the kind feedback on the site. I haven’t played around with the gallery settings enough to figure out why it’s pulling random images, but as you saw the category page is now consistently a grid and no longer lopsided. Also, thanks for the WPfolio project, I’ve honestly gone years without getting around to making a site for myself and this made it really easy.

P.S. Yes, our circles overlap. See you at CAA.

I found that the last image uploaded was the one that showed up on the category table of contents page.

If the incorrect image showed up on the category page, I would first delete it and then re-upload it and add it to the gallery again, so that it would be the last uploaded. And then it showed up on the category page. (I could be wrong about this, but it worked for me.)

I also changed the dates of posts so that they would show up on the category page in the correct order.

we have some code to fix this in the WPFolio ticket, I just haven’t had time to get it working. Anyone is welcome to give it a shot, but it will be in a future update of the theme.
