# WP.COM vs URL.ORG

 * Hello All,
 * I am currently responsible for supporting 141 WP Websites ALL of which were set
   up using WP copies to a URL.ORG and then activated and supported at no charge(
   this is a nonprofit organization). The organization is using a 5 year old Custom
   Theme developed by some folks who are no longer available. You can probably imagine
   the problems I am having keeping this clunky heard working.
 * I am anticipating 100 – 150 new applications for new sites this coming year.
 * So, my question: Should I consider offering new applications the WP.COM version
   with the option of changing to the URL.ORG version AFTER they proved that they
   are going to actually use and keep updated their sites? I am not really too versed
   with the .COM version except that I have heard that it is very limited in its
   offerings even though it is free of charge for the basics.
 * You thoughts, opinions?

 * Thanks for your reply.
 * All of the supported sites are basically Clubs with content being added regarding
   meetings, local issues, etc. So, I suspect that this would fall into the ‘basic
   functionality’ category.
 * Thanks for the link. That went a long way to giving me some background. But, 
   I still don’t really see the advantage of the URL.ORG sites over the WP.COM sites
   EXCEPT where the possible limitations might apply. We use a lot of different 
   plugins based on a particular sites desires for instance.

 * If the sites only need basic functionality as you describe (pages/posts with 
   text and images), starting off with a .com site might be a good way to go until
   the owners prove that they’re invested in maintaining/updating their sites.
 * The only thing they’ll lose out on is use of your domain name.

 * Thanks for the replies. After a lot of consideration and a lot of conversation
   within the organization we are going with the .org sites since they have so much
   to offer. The .com is just too limited for our needs.
