# wp.com theme > self-hosted site

 * In my search for themes, the one I’ve settled for is a free theme found on wordpress
   dot com. My question is: Will this theme (Motif) be updated (a notification in
   the admin panel) as plugins/themes from wordpress.org would be?
 * My assumption is, this will not be the case. I’d rather know for sure!
 * I have Googled for this information but have not *obviously* found an answer.
 * After extracting the zip file, downloaded from the .com site, I looked for a 
   license.txt file – only to not find one included.

 * Unless Automattic decides to fix the theme up and release it for free on WordPress.
   org, no, you will not receive automatic updates for it.
 * However, they do just that quite often, and currently the Automattic theme team
   has around 42 themes here on w.org. Motif is not yet one of those.

 * Didn’t mean to imply that it was a bad theme. All the themes available through.
   com are pretty good. But they’re not all available on .org yet, so they don’t
   get updates.
 * If at some point in the future they submit it to .org, then updates will become
   available for it then.

 * You’re reply was not misconstrued, my friend. Motif is a nice theme. It’s not
   completely out of the picture for me to use, just yet. I understand too; if I
   go that route, keeping up with updates Automattic releases will be soley my responsibility,
   in the interim.
 * After doing more research, I learned of the possibility of using SVN. Looking
   at the ‘updater.php’ file, I gleaned WPCom_Theme_Updater from it. That search
   led me to a post on wordpress.org, talking about using SVN.
