• We have two sites running WordPress, a public site and a development site where we test out new ideas before posting on the public site. When our Sysop upgraded our development site to WP4.0 recently, every page and post acquired a large left margin that pushed the content over onto the right sidebar, and the navigation menu was completely bollixed. After several days of fruitless troubleshooting, we decided that it was not our fault and restored our site from a backup prior to the WP4 “upgrade”.

I see that several other users have reported problems with WP4.0 on this forum. Is there any official word on what is the matter?

  • Many problems have been due to an incomplete file update. Apparently some update methods and some FTP programs can skip a file. The solution is to do a manual file update, keeping wp-config.php and /wp-contents etc.

Some themes have been reported as being incompatible with v4.0, the theme specific support forum is the place to enquire. Maybe your theme is one of these ?

Another issue is that people have lost theme changes in an update. They had not used a child theme and had put their changes into the files of a standard theme.
