Pursuing a WP Web site. Help!!

I built a “home page”, made it static, designated it as home page in the settings reading. Fine. Eliminated all widgets except Meta (did not want to eliminate the link back to the dashboard.)

Cannot get rid of the blog part. Tried to tamper with the page.php file in the 2010 themes directory but was not successful. Can’t go bump in the night; need to know what to change or eliminate.

WP for Dummies takes one this far and then describes how to create new templates.

Do I need to create a new template for the front page? And for the other pages to come?

try the plugin called frontpage manager

Have you got a URL? Sounds like your page template still has the sidebar widgets showing blogroll, blog meta, archive links etc? If so and you are using a theme with a one column page template (such as Twenty Ten) then this is your best bet.

Otherwise you can copy your existing page.php template, rename it (page-singlecolumn.php), and remove the call to get_sidebar(). Hope that helps. 🙂

Try using a static front page:

The front page is static. It does not show posts. I understand to show posts I will have to create a blog page and designate it through settings reading. A standard web site will not be having posts.

I removed all the widgets but the right bar is still there (invisible); the page content does not expand into this area. I addded the Text widget and I supose I can expand the text here to fill the column – but then the lack of flexibiltity is dictating the design, not good.

I placed the Meta widget in the Footer so I can get back to the dashboard quickly.

I named the front page “Welcome To” because the title of the page appears automatically. Need to get rid of that aspect. Wonder what happens if title is blank? Then I won’t see it on the dashboard either?

Real issue is: I can’t get rid of the comment box under the content. This is what I meant by can’t get rid of the blog.

    Have you got a URL?

Yes, this is not a real website, such an experiment to see it how could work.

Edit the page in question, scroll down below the content editing field to the “Discussion” box and uncheck “Allow comments” and “Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this page.”

Yes!!!!!! That did it. Thank you. I see I have to examine every inch of every page to see what’s going on. I can work with what’s left in the content area.

Question: Suppose this really was a real web site. I wouldn’t want the Meta widget to appear anywhere. But if I remove it, there will be no way into the dashboard to edit the content unless I attach /wp-admin/ to the url. Yes?

Then there’s the matter of the title appearing automatically.

So, I suppose I need to look at other themes now and see how these issues behave.

That’s correct. You can bookmark it the old-fashioned way. 🙂
