Support » Fixing WordPress » WP v. 3.5.2. media library uploaded files are broken images

  • The files I upload to my media library are suddenly displaying as a broken image. The files that are already in there are fine. But for the last few days when I upload a file (jpg, gif, png, doesn’t matter which), the upload seems to be successful but the image doesn’t display (there’s just a broken image graphic). If I select edit, the file actually does display in the edit mode. It does not display anywhere else. The file is actually being uploaded to my server, but the image cannot be displayed in the media library, or if I add it to a page. I can add images from the media library to pages that I uploaded before this happened. I have other WordPress sites and they’re not having this problem.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

  • i have the same problem, but for me it started happening when i migrate my website.

    Any ideas? please!!!

you are right @esmi, i didnt realize!
    Finally i fixed my problem.
After migrating my website from one hosting to another, all my images looked broken in the Media Library. Even if i would have added a new image, it looked broken as well.
It was a problem with the hosting, i had to change the permission of the folder “uploads” to be 775.
The hosting provider is Namesco, which gave me other problems as well…

im afraid that i was “wrong”.

The way i fixed the problem worked because i was using version 3.5.1

Now i’m developing a new website using version 3.5.2 and i get the same problem with the Media Library.

    – By clicking ‘Add new’ in the Media library, i can manage to upload an image but when i click ‘Attach’, nothing is displayed in the pop up window, therefore i cannot attach the image.
    – By Clicking “Set featured image” inside a page, i don’t see any files in the Media library and, if i click ‘Upload Files’ to add a new image, i get this error message : “An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.”

    I have tried:
    – Reinstall WordPress (3.5.2 again)
    – NOT install custom post types
    – check hosting permissions for the “uploads” folder

    no success 🙁
i may come back to 3.5.1 (i knew i shouldnt have use the new version, i hate updates and upgrades XD)

if anyone finds out, please post it!! (If the topic doesn’t “get” closed without being resolved…)

Same issue, anybody have a solution yet?

What version of PHP? I was having lots of odd problems with media manger, broken or missing images, and problems with thumbnail generation, but an update to PHP 5.4 then all issue magically disappeared.

I had this problem recently, I fixed it by using my FTP program to set permissions on the “wp-content/uploads/” folder (and all sub folders) to 755 ie. executable and readable by public.

Not sure if this presents some security risks but it solved the problem.
