 * WP is no longer creating thumbnail previews of PDF uploads for me. I’ve successfully
   used this feature as a method of displaying the PDF front-cover on various websites
   so its affects the front-end of the sites. Fortunately I have a check for an
   image or display a placeholder if no thumb was found which prevented a blank
   space but the front-cover was way more intuitive for the user than any placeholder.
 * I checked various sites on my local environment as well two distinct hosting
   environments all of which were previously creating thumbnails. All sites were
   running 4.9.4 but no thumbs are now created for a PDF upload.
 * I understand this was introduced in WP 4.7 and I’ve previously had no issues
   with it.
 * Does it now require to be enabled?

 * here is a very detailed write up on that subject. Maybe after reading you can
   better determine what has happened in preventing this from working on your site.

 * Ah thank you.
 * I had upgraded the version of my MAMP Pro in recent times and Imagick/ImageMagick
   was no longer enabled. I was certain it enabled by default as I don’t ever recalling
   manually enabling it in the past.
 * That explains the local environment so hopefully I can get answers from the hosting
   company.
 * Its a very useful feature to have a front-cover thumbnail auto-generated.

 * Hosting company needed to update the relevant modules, took them a while to figure
   it out at first they pointed the finger at recent theme developments but I could
   see from the media library roughly when it stopped working so that didn’t fit
   with the theme development updates timeline, so it was server issue.
 * Can’t believe it stopped working both locally and remotely at roughly the same
   time. I was initially stumped by this.
