Support » Plugin: New User Approve » WP-SpamShield Warning

  • Hi,

After installing the plugin “New User Approve”, I am getting this Security Warning :

Plugin "New User Approve" is attempting to "phone home" to retrieve data without informing site owner or requesting consent.

    Content blocked by WP-SpamShield.

    Any idea why?

    Thanks,

    Regards,
    Jerome

  • The term “Phoning home” means code is contacting its developer’s website. There are a number of ways it can do this. Doing that (without informed consent) potentially puts user websites at risk, and could cause your site to become victim to spyware or other potential security issues. It’s against the WordPress developer guidelines to “phone home” without explicitly asking the user for permission…in other words, there would have to be an option in the settings (or some similar mechanism of asking for permission) before a plugin could do so. There are cases where a plugin may need to do so, and in those cases, if they provide permission the plugin would be allowed.

See the WordPress Detailed Plugin Guidelines:

    • Point 7: The plugin may not “phone home” or track users without their informed, explicit, opt-in consent.

If you received that warning, then it means exactly what the warning said:

Plugin “New User Approve” is attempting to “phone home” to retrieve data without informing site owner or requesting consent.

There was some code in the plugin a while ago that did not comply with the WordPress plugin guidelines. I removed the code promptly after being contacted by wordpress.org.

The spam shield plugin still has code that blocks the side widgets from displaying. I will soon be releasing an update that will bypass this warning since it is now invalid.

Sorry for the inconvenience. The plugin is very secure.

    The plugin is very secure.

Actually…this statement is not true. People have tried to contact you about fixing these, but you don’t respond.
